Below is a breakdown of the parts of a Massachusetts auto policy and how they protect individuals.
Part One: Bodily Injury to others:
This part of the auto policy pays for injuries such as medical expenses, pain and suffering to people injured or killed by your automobile in an accident that occurs in Massachusetts only.
Part Two: Personal Injury Protection (PIP):
This coverage pays up to $8,000 to you or anyone in your car, passengers and pedestrians, no matter who is at fault for the accident. PIP pays for medical expenses, replacement services and lost wages.
Part Three: Bodily Injury Caused By An Uninsured Auto:
This coverage pays damages for bodily injury resulting from certain accidents caused by uninsured or hit-and-run autos. At Lydon & Murphy Insurance we strongly advise that the limits for this part of the policy are at least $250,000 per person $500,000 per accident.
Part Four: Damage to Someone Else’s Property:
This coverage pays for damages to someone else whose auto or other property is damaged in an accident. At Lydon & Murphy Insurance we recommend that all of our insured have $250,000 in coverage.
Part Five: Optional Bodily Injury:
This coverage pays for damages to people injured or killed in accidents if you or a household member are legally responsible for the accident. Unlike the Compulsory part, this coverage does provide coverage for injuries to guest occupants and for accidents occurring outside of Massachusetts. At Lydon & Murphy Insurance we strongly advise that the limits for this part of the policy are at least $250,000 per person $500,000 per accident.
Part Six: Medical Payments:
This coverage pays for reasonable expenses for necessary medical and funeral services to yourself and your passengers incurred as the result of an accident. At Lydon & Murphy Insurance we strongly advise that the limits for this part of the policy are at least $10,000.
Part Seven: Collison:
Collision coverage pays for collision damage to your car including vehicles rented or borrowed by yourself, less your deductible, no matter who causes the accident. Deductibles range from $300- $2,500. The higher the deductible the lower the premium price.
Part Nine: Comprehensive:
This coverage pays for damage to, or loss of your car, less your deductible, resulting from non-collision accident such as fire, theft, vandalism and hitting an animal. This part of the policy also provides you with glass coverage without a deductible. Just like collision converges deductibles range from $300- $2,500
Part Ten: Substitute Transportation:
This coverage reimburses you up to the limits shown on the declaration page, in the event that your auto was in a collision and is being repaired or replaced.
Part Eleven: Towing and Labor
This coverage pays for towing and labor costs, up to the limit shown on the declaration page. It will only pay for a tow resulting in an accident. It is not for mechanical breakdowns.
Part Twelve: Bodily Injury Caused By An Underinsured Auto:
This coverage pays for damages for bodily injury as the result of certain accidents caused by someone who does not have enough insurance. At Lydon & Murphy Insurance we strongly advise that the limits for this part of the policy are at least $250,000 per person $500,000 per accident.
